A shallow pool of rainwater becomes a mirror, reflecting sky, flag, and fading light, turning a fleeting moment into something quietly timeless. I took this photograph on my way home from work, drawn in first by the stillness of the pooled rainwater. At that moment, the sky held no hint of what was to come, but instinct told me not to let it pass. I hurried home to collect my camera, hoping the light would wait. When I returned, the sky was already ablaze. Penny Hole Bay, is somewhat off the beaten track but no matter the time of day, it’s always rewarding. Even if I never take my camera out of the bag, just being there, soaking in the sounds of the waves crashing against the rocks and the cliff walls is invigorating. On my previous visits I captured long exposures, milkyway images and timelapses. This is one of the few images where the final print matched the image that I had in my head. I wanted to capture the shape and textures of this iconic rock so I needed to wade out into the water to get closer to the rock. It was all very exciting and with no one around a bit eerie. The afterglow from the setting sun creeps above the horizon and paints the sky and a few whispy clouds left behind.
